Oil Rinsing Benefits & How To

Oil Rinsing is when you add oil to your hair after you have cleansed (shampoo’d or co washed) but right before you apply your rinse out conditioner. It is an added step to your wash day regimen but the benefits are pretty phenomenal. Oil rinsing reduces/eliminates frizziness that naturally occurs in our natural hair. It is different however then just adding essential or carrier oils into a conditioner/ treatment because you are simply adding the oil by itself without adding heat. Besides eliminating/ reducing frizz there are several other benefits to adding an oil rinse to your wash day regimen

Oil Rinsing Benefits

Creates added slip which helps to detangle the hair

Enhances the natural shine of your hair creating a shinier/glossier look

Increases moisture and softness of the hair

Decreases the presence of single strand knots

Aids in moisture retention which decreases breakage and increases retention

Oil Rinsing Directions: How To Properly Oil Rinse

Oil rinsing is incredibly simple. After you have pre-pood, cleansed (with a shampoo or co-wash of your choice), you coat your hair in the oil of your choice. The best and most beneficial oils for oil rinsing are: Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, , or Avocado Oil as those oils can penetrate the hair. However any oil that is thick and liquid will work as well such as Jamaican Black Castor Oil, Grape Seed Oil , Jojoba Oil, or Almond oil(discount code from Mielle Organics: TRESSES). I personally have used a blend of castor oil and olive oil for my oil rinsing sessions and plan on using almond oil in the mix on my next go around. You leave the oil on the hair for 3-5 minutes (different from the pre-poo step which is usually left on for 20+ minutes or more) and rinse it out with cool water and a conditioner of your choice.

After you have oil rinsed (I suggest giving it a go 2-3 times before making a final decision as to whether or not you want to keep it in your regimen) you will notice your hair is extremely soft, frizz free and possess a natural luster/shine. Because it is only an extra 3-5 minutes I don’t mind giving this step a continued place in my hair regimen for the next few weeks as I continue to focus more on hair health than length.
