Any curly haired girl will tell you, the struggle is real. There’s lots of conflicting advice out there (touch it! no, don’t touch it!) and no curl is the same. Luckily when we were developing our Curl line, we logged a lot of (long) ours in the lab, our test salon, and our bathrooms putting some of these tips to the test. Here are stylist Natalie LaFace’s definitive list of dos and don’ts..
In the shower:
DON’T: pile curls on top of your head in the shower (hello, tangles).
DO: use your fingers or a wide tooth comb to distribute co-wash or shampoo while cleansing. This will eliminate tangles and help prevent frizz.
DON’T: shampoo everyday (though, frankly, all hair types should heed this advice). Because of its shape, curly hair is prone to looking and feeling dry. The twists and turns don’t allow natural oils to easily distribute to ends, so your hair feels drier.
DO: if you get the urge to wash it daily, try rinsing with water (followed by conditioner) in-between shampoo days. Alternatively, use our gentle co-wash to achieve cleansing and conditioning benefits without overly drying hair.
DON’T: use products with sulfates. They strip your hair.
Styling tips:
DON’T: use a fine tooth comb. Ouch!
DO: use a wide tooth comb instead.
DON’T: touch or brush curls during the drying process. Resist the urge, it will only create frizz.
DO: gently tousle curls when they are 100% dry. At this point, you can use your fingers to separate curls to maintain a smooth look, or use a boar bristle paddle brush for a more relaxed, messy look.
DON’T: over heat style (another good reason not to shampoo every day).
DO: try air drying. And on days you do want to use a hot tool, layer on a protective product (Natalie likes Restore Instant Protection spray).
