Hair texture is something you’re born with, and coarseness comes in different shapes and sizes. Typically with coarse hair the cuticle is raised—meaning if you put a strand under the microscope, you’d see the cuticle flare much like an armadillo’s shell. That’s what makes it feel rough. If you have a particularly thick hair strand (meaning the individual fiber, not the number of hairs on your head), your hair can feel coarse, too.
Aside from your genetics, if you’re addicted to your flat iron or you get regular chemical treatments (think: coloring or relaxing), that damage can also lead to rough feeling strands.
If you’d call your hair coarse, ultra frizzy, or in need of a little extra nourishment, read on.
Brush better. If you like to wear your hair straight, get yourself a boar bristle brush. These natural bristles are softer and more pliable, so they’ll create the least amount of friction on your hair. Translation: smoother strands and less frizz. Plastic brushes, on the other hand, are stiff so they tend to be more damaging.
Be ingredient savvy. Because of the way the cuticle on coarse hair is raised, your hair’s natural oils never feel like quite enough. Oils are the obvious solution, but beware of silicone-laden products marketing themselves as a natural solution. (Look for ingredients ending in “cone” on the back of the bottle). And just because you cook with something doesn’t make it good for your hair. Coconut oil is a semi-solid, and it can leave a heavy, gunky residue on your hair.
You need something nourishing and fast absorbing. We created a product that mimics the oils found naturally in your hair to make your strands instantly smoother and more manageable. Read more about it here.
Sleep smarter. Upgrade your bedding with a satin pillowcase, which will create less friction and will not rough up the cuticle. In that same vein, coarse hair needs to be protected while you sleep, so braid it, put it up in a bun or wrap it. This will help fight frizz and keep hair from getting disrupted.
Use heat protection. This one is self explanatory—just do it.
Embrace the day 2 touch up. Hair feeling dry and unmanageable on day 2 or 3? You don’t have to wash and restyle. Instead, touch up dry hair with a little bit of Nourishing Oil to add nourishment back to your hair. We love these second day styling tips from Twist Me Pretty for gorgeous, get-up-and-go hair.
