I have naturally wavy hair, and while I love the texture, I also hate the annoyances that come along with it. When I was younger, I had beautiful natural curls that always looked perfect. But as the years went on, my hair got more wavy, more frizzy, and more difficult to handle. The mere mention of rain makes my hair instantly frizzy, and humidity creates fast curls (actually, sometimes it looks cute). The majority of the time, my hair does want it wants, rather than what I want it to do.
Throughout high school and most of college, I put a lot of effort into making my natural waves and curls straight and smooth. My best friend in high school had sleek hair that dried stick-straight every time. Meanwhile, if I let my hair dry naturally, it would result in a mix of waves, random curls, and lots of frizz. I was insanely jealous. I bought flat irons, anti-frizz serum, and any other beauty product that promised straighter strands. I flat-ironed my hair into submission everyday, slowly destroying it with heat. I got a few different keratin treatments in college, and for a few months, enjoyed effortlessly straight hair.
But one summer, I was a waitress at a restaurant on the beach. It didn’t matter what I did to my hair before I went to work – by the time my shift was over, it was a mess of curls from the ocean air and humidity. I finally stopped trying to change it, and started embracing my natural texture. For the last few years, I’ve been trying to do just that, especially this past year. I’ve realized how much damage I’ve inflicted on my hair by heat styling so much, and it has totally freaked me out.
As of today, I honestly can’t remember the last time I used a flat iron on my hair. My current hair routine goes something like this: shower, use a lot of conditioner, put curl defining/smoothing product in, blow-dry the roots with my head flipped over so they’re not flat, then twist my hair and let air dry. Embracing my natural texture has not only made my hair healthier, but it has also cut my morning routine in half and made my life a whole lot easier.
But in order to embrace your natural waves or curls, you need to know the following tips. If you don’t, you’re looking at a lot of frizz and breakage. Here are 17 wavy and curly hair tips and tricks every girl needs.
1. Follow these 10 commandments (especially the first – satin pillowcases really do make a difference!)
2. Buy and use these four essential products for smoother, frizz-free curls or waves.
3. Beware of certain ingredients, and always make sure you’re moisturizing.
4. Use a diffuser instead of a blow-dryer. The cool setting is your best bet for frizz, but if you can’t do it the whole time, at least blast your hair with cool air for the last minute or so.
5. Rinse with cold water, too. This seals in moisture and leaves you less susceptible to frizz.
6. When you get out of the shower, wrap wet hair in a cotton t-shirt instead of a towel. A towel causes more breakage and frizz.
7. You can also try this easy tip with a shirt – put curl mousse or gel into wet hair, then wrap in a t-shirt and leave for a while for beautiful texture.
8. Give co-washing a try for healthier-looking hair.
9. Go through this routine for super easy styling.
10. Get regular trims to get rid of dead split-ends.
11. Use conditioner every time you wash your hair.
12. Embrace your natural waves using this tip. I do this all the time and it really does work!
13. Brush with a wide-tooth comb instead of a regular brush.
14. If you have wavy hair like me, make sure you have these products in your bathroom.
15. Use leave-in conditioner before any curling product for less frizz and knots.
16. A diffuser and some product makes for the easiest styling ever.
17. Keep your waves looking fresh overnight by trying this bun trick.
