I would never take the liberty of speaking for everyone on earth. But, if I were to do so, I would say that I assume it is a wish of everyone on earth, more or less, to wake up with perfect, gorgeous hair every single day with little to no effort. Everyone’s exact definition of “perfect” hair varies, obviously–some people like super-elaborate coifs; others are into whatever whatever happens to be trendy at the time–but having a good hair day without having to do much is, objectively, pretty desirable. (I assume.)
The good news? It can be done! While some things takes more effort than others, there are a bunch of hair styling tips and tricks that you can do every night before going to bed that make it so that your hair will look the way you want it to every time you wake up in the morning. So, check out these easy ways to wake up with perfect hair every single day:
1. Use coconut oil as deep conditioner:
I mean, duh. You didn’t think you’d be able to get through this post without at least one mention of coconut oil, did you? Of course not. Anyway, coconut oil is a great source of moisture for your hair–if you know you’re washing your hair in the morning, put a small amount of coconut oil on your hair, focusing on your ends and avoiding the roots. This will help add moisture and minimize frizz.
2. Or aloe vera:
If coconut oil is too intense for you, aloe vera is another great, lightweight moisturizing and shine-boosting agent. Mix aloe vera gel with water and essential oil, put it in a spray bottle, and spray it on your hair before you go to bed, concentrating on the ends. This way, your hair will be super sleek (but not greasy) when you wake up in the morning.
3. Use silk pillowcases:
If you can, consider investing in a silk pillowcase. This mitigates static and friction, which, in turn, helps prevent breakage and frizz in your hair.
4. Or wrap your hair in a silk scarf:
If you don’t feel like going for a full-on silk pillowcase, you can always just get a silk scarf and wrap it around your hair–even if you’re sleeping on a cotton pillow, this will help protect your locks.
5. Straighten your hair the night before:
If you like straight hair, but like it to have a tiny bit of a lived-in look, too, just straighten it before you go to bed. This will save you effort in the morning, and sleeping on it will help make it look little more natural. (Sleeping on silk pillowcases and scarves will help preserve this, too.)
6. If you blow it out, make sure to use a volumizing spray:
Buy this from Nordstrom for $15
If you’re more of a straight-up blowdry girl, you can do that the night before as well–just make sure you’re using a volumizing spray. Even if your hair naturally is pretty voluminous, this will hep preserve the look overnight.
7. Sleep with your hair in a bun:
Don’t feel like dealing with heat tools? Just throw your hair into a bun before you go to bed. This helps create loose, natural-looking, frizz-free hair.
8. Or multiple buns:
If you want tighter curls, just do more buns–this intensifies the effect on each section.
9. But use scrunchies instead of elastics:
Whatever size buns you go for (heh), make sure you’re using a scrunchie or plastic hair tie instead of a tight elastic. This is gentler than a typical hair tie, so it won’t pull on your hair and create breakage.
10. French braid before bed:
Wait until your hair is slightly damp. Then, pull your hair into a French braid (you can check out some tutorials here). This prevents frizz, protects from static, and creates fun, low-maintentance waves that last throughout the day.
11. Use baby powder for beachy waves:
Baby powder for beachy hair? Sounds crazy, no? It works, though–if you don’t feel like washing your hair, just sprinkle a little bit of baby powder into your roots. Then, pull it into braids. The baby powder will sop up grease and help the style “hold.”
12. Try body lotion:
Buy this at Walgreens for $6.99
Really! If you’re in a pinch, body lotion is a great way to make your hair sleek and shiny. Take a small amount of lotion, work it though your hair, and brush it with a wide-toothed comb.
13. Use tanning oil:
Really really. After washing hair, let it air-dry. Then, comb and part it the way you usually wear it, divide your hair into four sections, and spritz it with the tanning oil of your choice. While you’re doing this twist your hair into coils and make sure the oil is evenly distributed. When you wake up in the morning, you’ll have soft, shiny, beachy-smelling (presumably) waves.
14. Try headband curls:
When your hair is slightly damp, place a headband around your head. Then, gather a section of hair, twist it away from your head, and tuck each section into your headband, like you see above. When you wake up, you’ll have perfect, ringlet-y curls.
15. Blow dry it–but just a little–before you go to bed:
Warning–this tip, from British Vogue, is not for the faint of heart. But if you want a mussed-up, Kate Moss-type look, blow dry your hair until it’s about 90 percent dry, then go to sleep like you normally would. When you wake up, spray with a texturizing spray and finger comb it for a perfectly disheveled look.
