Winter Hair Tips to Promote Healthy Natural Hair

Winter Hair Tips to Promote Healthy Natural Hair

Written By Venus L

An essential notion for all Naturalistas to comprehend, learning to protect your hair during the winter season is vital to the health of your natural hair. A season that can be very damaging to hair of all types, those with natural hair should be especially careful in terms of how they care for their hair during the winter months. With that said, the following is a list of tips to help keep your hair healthy and thriving during those frigid months.

Less Hair Washing

The winter weather can be notoriously harsh to natural hair. Washing your hair less during the winter months allows the hair to maintain its own natural oils for longer periods of time. Given that colder weather can be especially drying to the hair, less washing will allow your hair to stay moisturized and will prevent dryness and breakage. Additionally, co-washing (washing with conditioner only) can also have great effects. For more information on co-washing, click here!

Deep Conditioning

Another great method of protecting your natural hair during the winter months is to utilize deep conditioners. Another way to protect your hair against the massive dryness that can be caused by the brutal winter air, using a deep conditioner at least bi-weekly will help to keep your hair moisturized and prepared to withstand the winter elements. Oil Massages

Another great way to address issues with dryness and breakage of natural hair during the winter, giving your hair and scalp oil massages is a fantastic way to ensure your hair retains its moisture and it can even be quite relaxing. Simply choose your favorite oil, add a small bit to your hair via the application nozzle or your own palm. You can then massage your hair and scalp for at least 5 minutes, and seal in the moisture by covering the hair with a satin scarf or cap. For more information about oils to use to massage your natural hair and scalp, click here!

Trimming Ends

A notoriously underrated way to promote strong, long, healthy hair is by maintaining freshly clipped ends. By regularly clipping your ends you are removing damaged ends and thusly, preventing the damaged from spreading to other areas of the hair. You can either go to a professional or DIY at home. Neither method is especially difficult or expensive, it all depends on what you’re comfortable with. For more information on trimming your ends, click here!

Wear Hats

This might seem like a no-brainer, but wearing hats, especially ones that provide an exceptional level of warmth, not only helps to stabilize your body temperature, but it also protects your hair. For added protection, tie your hair down with a satin scarf before putting your hat on. This may seem like a small step, but this is imperative, especially in areas where temperatures have a tendency to reach the subzero range.

Protective Styles

For those who are yet unfamiliar with the concept of protective styling, they are defined as any style that can help shelter the hair from harmful chemical or environmental factors. With an array of styles to choose from, you can style your hair in a number of ways and still maintain the health of your natural hair. Some protective styles need to be done daily, others can last weeks or even months, just keep in mind that the scalp still required oiling and using a scarf at night is the best thing you can do to maintain the style.

Henna Treatments

The last and arguably one of the best method of protecting your natural hair is utilizing hair henna treatments. A great way to promote growth and enhance the natural sheen of your hair, henna treatments allow Naturalistas to change their hair color with a safe, chemical free formula all while strengthening the hair follicles and even providing a bit of straightening. A great addition to your natural hair care regimen, for more about hair henna, click here!

Overall, finding and adhering to the perfect natural hair care regimen, is an essential action for every Naturalista. No matter which tips you choose to use, and which ones you ignore, doing something is almost always better than doing nothing. Either way, just keep in mind that everyone is different and what works great for someone else, might be an epic fail for you. Nevertheless, the most important factor is maintaining moisture as the harsh winter winds can do a world of damage to your natural tresses, in a very short period of time.

Why I Rinse My Hair with Apple Cider Vinegar

Why I Rinse My Hair with Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar (ACV). You may have seen or heard it mentioned in the blog world. You definitely would have seen it on my blog because I use it regularly during my wash days. Since I've been using apple cider vinegar on my relaxed hair I've noticed a great improvement in my scalp. Particularly less itching and a decrease in flaking.

Apple cider vinegar also referred to as ACV, is made from the fermentation of apple cider. ACV has benefits making it good for all kinds of hair including relaxed hair. Some of the benefits of doing ACV rinses on your hair are:

  • Dandruff and itchy scalp relief. The acetic acid in ACV stops the growth of bacteria and fungus that can contribute to dandruff and itchy scalp
  • Helps remove product build-up on the hair and scalp. So I make sure to use it every time I cleanse. I make extra special care to use it when I co-wash as a kind of cleansing double-check for my scalp
  • pH balancing which is great if you relax your hair as relaxers can change the pH balance of your hair
  • Increases shine by closing cuticle allowing light to reflect off of the strands

Apple cider vinegar is strong which can irritate your scalp. I've found it's best to dilute it before applying it. The two ways I dilute ACV are:

  • Mix 2 parts water and 1 part ACV
  • Mix 1 part green tea, 1 part water and 1 part ACV

No matter how I dilute it, I apply it directly to my scalp using an application bottle before I shampoo or co-wash. After applying it I massage it into my scalp and then go right into shampooing or co-washing without rinsing it out.

If you're interested in including apple cider vinegar in your regimen don't forget to look at the ingredient list to make sure it's pure apple cider vinegar. The only ingredient should be apple cider vinegar. You want to make sure what you're using is natural or organic.

The brand I use is the Walmart store brand, but I've seen other hair bloggers rave about Bragg's apple cider vinegar. I opted to use the Walmart brand instead of the Bragg apple cider vinegar purely because of the cheaper cost.

For beautiful and healthy hair use Apple Cider Vinegar. It also helps in dandruff, split ends, dry and itchy scalp. Check out the home remedies!

Once you start using apple cider vinegar home remedy the incredible transformation will keep you coming back until you move the bottle from your kitchen to your bathroom cabinet.

For ages, people have been using apple cider vinegar to help with weight loss, food preservation and improving skin conditions such as acne and pimples. But only a few people know that Apple cider vinegar home remedy creates a shiny look on the hair and makes it healthy.

Apple cider vinegar is an easily available and cost-effective method for growth and cleansing your hair. The solution is effective in preventing dry scalp, dandruff, and itching issues. It also reduces the growth of bacteria and fungi which block the hair follicles that support the hair growth.

Why use Apple cider Vinegar for Hair

Apple cider vinegar nourishes and help in creating a healthy scalp in several ways:

Nutrients

Apple cider vinegar is rich in nutrients such as potassium which is needed for hair growth and it helps to smooth your hair, reducing split ends.

Protective layer

Apple cider vinegar home remedy restores the hair’s protective layer which helps to repair damaged hair. Hair’s protective layer can be damaged by the use of excessive shampoo, UV rays, as well as air pollutants. If you want to treat dandruff and itchy scalp naturally, consider using concentrated apple cider vinegar for them too.

PH balance

Using shampoo usually, increases pH factor. Naturally, the hair is slightly acidic with a pH factor of between 4- 6. Applying alkaline hair products clogs hair follicles resulting in dry, dull and frizzy hair. Also, imbalanced pH results in bacterial and fungal infections, dandruff, dryness that makes the hair weak and tangle. The antibacterial and anti-fungal properties of ACV help to control dandruff. By using ACV you get rid of such problems and save money on expensive hair care.

How to use Apple Cider Vinegar home remedy

The Apple cider vinegar hair rinse is recommended once or twice per week. You can choose to shampoo as normal then apply the Apple cider vinegar hair rinse or you can leave this solution on the hair for about 30 minutes before rinsing out.

Apple cider vinegar hair rinse recipes

Apple cider vinegar with water

  • 1/4 cup to 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 cups of water

To restore your hair’s natural and shiny look, mix the apple cider vinegar home remedy and water. Apply the mixture on your hair after shampooing. Consider using a spray bottle so as to spritz your hair with the solution and massage it easily into your scalp. Allow the mixture to sit for some minutes before rinsing out with water. Also, you can add a few drops of tea tree oil to add a lovely fragrance and relief. There is no need to use a hair conditioner.

Apple cider vinegar with honey and Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is an effective home remedy for hair loss and treating itchy scalp. Mix 3 tablespoon of aloe Vera juice, 1/2 cup of apple cider vinegar and one teaspoon of rosemary oil. Mix properly, spray into hair and massage thoroughly for a few minutes. Cover your head using a shower cap for about 20 minutes. Rinse out your hair using cold water. The apple cider vinegar mixture will make your hair smooth and soft.

Apple Cider Vinegar can be mixed with rosemary oil, olive oil, baking soda, avocado and coconut oil.

Whipped Avocado, Honey, and Olive Oil Hair Mask

Whipped Avocado, Honey, and Olive Oil Hair Mask
hair mask

I’m trying to take better care of my hair. I’ve been admittedly not-so-great at hair care in past years—it’s been dyed and fried and bleached and neglected. And while I believe that a lot of the formula to healthy hair (and skin and nails) comes from what you put inside your body (good food and lots of water), I also think there are some things you can do externally to help keep your hair shiny, soft and smooth. And one of my new favorites is this all-natural hair mask.

me hair mask

When I was in high school, I used to have at-home spa days where I’d pick up a packet (or two, because my hair is so thick) of a chemical-laden deep conditioning treatment and let it sit on my hair while I painted my toes and watched 90210 reruns. I always loved how soft and shiny my hair was after those treatments, but now that I’m a little more conscious about the chemicals I put in and on my body, I thought I’d test out some all-natural conditioning treatments. There are a ton of recipes and formulas out there—and I’ve tried a lot of them—but this combo is my favorite. Not only because it makes my hair soft and shiny, but also because it has ingredients that I almost always have on hand.

avocado honey olive oil

The same fats and oils in avocado that make them good for your body also makes them a great option for helping to repair dry, brittle, or damaged hair. Olive oil is also extremely hydrating, and it helps protect your hair from damage—an awesome thing if you usually use a lot of heat on your hair. And honey is packed with scalp- and hair-strengthening vitamins (plus, it helps coat your hair strands and retain moisture). You can also toss in a few drops of lavender essential oil, which is a natural treatment for the scalp—helping to keep dandruff and itchy skin at bay. Oh, and it smells good, too.

The key to getting this hair mask to really get in deep and hydrate your hair is heat. There are a few different ways to go about this. My preferred method is to apply the mask to damp hair, wrap it up in a shower cap and then apply heat—either with a blow dryer or, my favorite, sitting out in the warm spring sunshine! I let it rest on my noggin for a good 30-45 minutes, about the amount of time it takes to get through a magazine. Then I rinse and wash with my normal shampoo and condition.

me shower cap

I tend to have oily roots (althoug, it is SO much better now that I only wash my hair a few times a week), so I try not put the mask on the first inch or so of my hair, but if your entire hair is frizzy or dry, slop that stuff on everywhere! And make sure you really slather it on your ends. If your hair doesn’t need a lot of conditioning, you can do this once a month or even less frequently, but if your hair is really asking for a drink, you could do it every couple of weeks. I would say that if your hair is normally thin or limp, I’d skip this hair mask—it’s really deep conditioning and might weigh your hair down (which is an awesome thing for my thick and wavy hair).

Enjoy!

What You Can Do To Keep Your Hair Looking Great

What You Can Do To Keep Your Hair Looking Great

There are ads everywhere around that tell you what you should be doing with your hair and what products to use. However, they are just trying to sell you a product. By taking the time to read the following article, you will find some simple things that will really truly work at keeping your hair looking great.

If you are going to be swimming in a chlorinated pool, you should make sure you wear a cap when swimming to protect it. If you do not have a cap, make sure you wash and condition your hair as soon as possible, afterwards, in order to protect it from the damage that chlorine causes.

For a quick and easy on the go hair tamer, try a dab of your favorite hand lotion. Simply rub a small amount into the palm of your hand and stroke your hair in a downward direction. This will tame frizz instantly and even offer the benefit of conditioning your hair, as well.

If you happen to have fine hair, it will not be to your best advantage to use large amounts of conditioner. They will just weigh down your hair, and make it look more limp and lifeless. The best conditioners to use for volume are mousse conditioners or leave-in conditioners.

While you should wash your hair often, don’t overdo it. Washing your hair too often, strips it of its natural oils, which gives it shine and volume. For most people, washing their hair a few times a week is enough, unless their hair is especially oily. Washing too often will turn hair dry and brittle.

When you are in the shower and washing your hair, make sure you turn your hot water down, whenever you are doing your washing and conditioning. Hot water can dry out and irritate your scalp and this can cause flaking and dandruff that is unattractive and also, hard to get rid of.

Avoid alcohol based styling products to avoid drying out your curly hair. The best method of applying your styling products is to separate the hair into multiple sections, and apply your styling creams or gels while the hair is still damp. A great way to keep the hair damp during application is to use a spray bottle filled with water.

Many people believe that a new shampoo switch makes their hair look more healthy. Your hair doesn’t know the difference between any given product, nor does it build up a tolerance. If you have a shampoo that has worked for you over time, your hair does not build up a tolerance to it. If you use heavy waxes on your hair, a clarifying shampoo every few weeks can remove any built-up residue.

As mentioned earlier, you do not have to be pulled into using a ton of different products to help your hair look great. Instead, take the time to follow the advice that was presented to you in this article. Before you know it, your hair will look better then you have ever seen it look.
